The ribs inside Late Bronze Age (L.B.A.) socketed axes which so puzzled typologists (see also 21-1007) are shown to have a simple functional explanation. Wedges of wax were put into slots cut in the clay core to act as spacers to hold the core in place. As the metal was poured in these would melt but not before they had served their purpose. -- AATA
