Dating old buildings from their nails is not a precise technique but when used with discretion, it has proved reliable and useful in determining whether the building was built entirely at one time or whether it was subjected to additions, alterations, or maintenance measures. In American buildings there are three types of nails: hand-wrought nails, cut nails, and wire nails. The history and use of these nails are discussed.
