Abstract
Brief discussion of mechanisms of copious whisker growth during the cyclic oxidation of copper and the formation of copper scale. Author states that whisker growth is favored because of large stresses generated within oxide layers as they grow. Both duplex oxide scale, as in copper (CuO-Cu<sub>2</sub>O system), and single oxide scale, as in zinc or nickel, are considered. -- AATA
