The history of the centuries old craft of casting lead pipe and sheet is traced from Roman times to the early nineteenth century. Except for a few specialists, the production of cast lead objects has now virtually ceased. Ancient methods of casting lead sheet and the advent of an alternative milled lead sheet product capable of being produced in larger sizes are described. The metallurgical characteristics of both types are described, and the more stable grain structure of cast lead sheet is shown. Much of the roofing requirements in medieval times were satisfactorily cast in simple flat sand beds on site and it was common to carry out re-roofing by melting down the old roofing sheet and re-casting on site. The development of methods for casting and fabricating lead pipe is also covered briefly. Roman pipe was fabricated from cast lead strip, bent and then joined by molten lead poured in a vee grove. Tudor pipe was made in much the same way and this practice continued until the late 17th century. Later methods of manufacture are described, up to seamless pipe by means of a semi-continuous casting process, and subsequent hydraulic extrusion presses. -- AATA
