Abstract
The development of arc welding over the last one hundred years is traced from its origins with bare electrodes, through coated electrodes, the submerged arc process, and welding under a protective gas (Tungsten Inert Gas, Metal Inert Gas and Metal Active Gas). The driving force for this development has been, to a great extent, to produce a low cost continuous welding process which can be automated. -- AATA
