Abstract
The color of potsherds fired under oxidizing conditions depends on several factors, a few of which are: the oxygen partial pressure, firing temperature, calcium content, and temper. In order to obtain reproducible results, reflection spectroscopy is carried out with light between 400 and 2600 nm. Hematite is essential for the apparent color. -- AATA
