There has been a recent shift in archaeometallurgy from the longstanding emphasis on metal objects, workshops, and documents, to a process orientation with an emphasis on the interpretation, both scientific and archaeological, of byproducts. These byproducts are usually abundant as waste material, but their recognition and analysis are requiring different approaches and a closer collaboration between archaeologist and archaeometallurgist.
