The goals of the graduate course in Conservation of Cultural Property, recently established in Italy at the University of Udine, are described. Particular attention is devoted to the instruction program in Book Restoration, one of the characteristic disciplines of the graduate course. Finally, the author affirms the need to assist the librarian in preservation work, through the publication and regular updating of the Principles for Conservation and Restoration and the Guidelines that establish the acceptable minimum quality specifications for all modern materials used in preservation treatments.
