Abstract
A fresco by Raphael, the Coronation of Charlemagne , in the Stanza dell'Incendio of the Vatican has been cleaned as part of a project by the Vatican museums to celebrate the quincentenary of Raphael's birth. The cleaning has restored the fresco to its original appearance revealing a very good state of conservation. The painting was almost entirely executed in true fresco. It was completed in seventy-two giornate (days) and was executed following the stages of the scaffolding. The technique used by Raphael is described.
