A couching technique developed by one textile conservator for relining old textiles is described. He prefers using a polyester fabric as the new support since it is more inert than other material. For sewing, however, cotton thread is preferred. Polyester thread is so sharp it could cut through old threads. The couching is not carried out regularly but in the form of random meanderings. This avoids putting the stress and strain always on the same warp/weft threads. Ends are not knotted or stitched in, instead the 4-inch loose ends are knotted together.
