Five large marble monuments inside the great hall of London's Guildhall are being restored by Nimbus, a Bristol-based company of restoration specialists. They worked out a programme starting with the thorough cleaning of the monuments. AB57 was used in the first cleaning stage while the second stage employed a dilute solution of Vulpex soap (potassium methyl cyclohexyl oleate). Cleaning was completed by a twice-over sponge down with cotton wool and warm water. Restoration problems revealed by cleaning include the discovery of numerous repairs which had been carried out in plaster of Paris painted with grey oil paint to blend them in with the dirty marble. No decision on these has been reached at the moment: possible solutions are presented in brief. Applications of Cosmolloid microcrystalline wax and white spirit for protection are being tested.
