Efforts are being made in several countries to develop the use of computer processing for recording watermarks as the sources of published information on watermarks are difficult to consult, it has been suggested that international regulation of the registration criteria is urgently required. It is considered that the international association of paper historians (iph) is the most qualified organisation to undertake this. A scheme is outlined with basic information to be included in such a registration system.
