In this article the authors treat several physical principles involved in the study of weathering of monuments. In particular, thermo-hygrometrical cycles, deposition processes, and condensation into the pores have been analyzed. There are also some examples, i.e. The Scrovegni Chapel, the Sistine Chapel, Leonardo's Last Supper , the Trajan and Antonin columns, etc., where the authors studied these phenomena.
