Abstract
X-ray diffraction was used to study the changes in crystalline structure which occured when goethite was heated. Comparison diffractograms are reproduced for normal haematite and three types with crystalline anomalies. This has confirmed that the disordered haematite occuring in prehistoric red colouring material does not have a natural origin.
