Once the equilibrated environment of a marine archaeological artifact has been disturbed by the excavator, it must be transferred to a stable environment until conservation work can begin. After discussion of general on-site storage and conservation procedures, such as labeling, documentation, removal of concretions, procedures are described in more detail for metals (iron, copper, silver, gold, lead, tin, aluminum, and their alloys), glass, ceramics, stone, organic materials and composite objects.
