Abstract
Description of the identification of pigments using microscopic analysis. Techniques used for sampling are outlined and each type (cross-section, flakes, and powdered sample) is characterized. Size, transparency, association, homogeneity, colour and pleochroism, refractive index and other physical elements of pigments are described. A classification of pigments is given. Microchemical tests can also be used to confirm the microscopic identifications.
