Abstract
The author begins by defining conservation and restoration and pointing out the problems involved in the application of these definitions. He describes why conservation is necessary and describes the requirements of the three major groups of owners. The requirements of restoration in museums is described and examples of the acceptable approach given. The thorny problem of whether clocks should function or not is also discussed. (Abstractor's note: An enjoyable and informative paper.)
