Abstract
Mineralogical and chemical compositions (16 elements) of 54 Sué pottery sherds from Sué mura kiln sites, Osaka, which played an important role in Sué pottery industry in Japan from the middle of the 5th to early 9th century AD, were determined by means of x-ray diffraction and instrumental neutron activation analyses. By combining these results with those obtained from thermal analysis and infrared spectrophotometry, firing temperatures were estimated to be around 1,200°C or higher for roost of normal gray Sué pottery sherds. Chemical characteristics of Sué pottery sherds of this district are also discussed.
