Abstract
Technical and optical qualities of plaster and types in use from the Medieval Age to the 18th century are discussed, partly with detailed descriptions based upon recent examinations. These include smooth but uneven plaster dependent upon the stages of scaffolding on Gothic examples, plaster-types structure with or without colored materials. Examination standards are proposed and the plaster conservation project at the Kartause Mauerbach near Vienna is described.
