Abstract
Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy is able to measure the number of unpaired electrons in dielectric materials such as quartz; this number is believed to be related to the number of electrons trapped as a result of the absorption of ionizing radiation, and may therefore be used for a dating method based on the same principles as thermoluminescent dating. Experiments were done using quartz containing 60 ppm aluminum to measure the ESR response to radiation doses in the range for archaeological dating. Plotting a peak amplitude in the ESR spectrum against radiation dose showed a monotonic relationship that could be used for dating. The relationship was consistent with being linear.
