Abstract
The paper in an artifact is an important part of the object and its qualities can be as important as those of the drawings and writing upon it. The article deals with the nature of paper and its deterioration, its surface texture and the influence on drawing materials and the effects that conservation treatments can have on paper. Some of the ethical considerations of conservation of paper are discussed.
