The mouthpieces of single-reed woodwind instruments such as clarinets and chalumeaux are often not preserved together with the instruments to which they belong. The restoration or replacement of these mouthpieces as well as the matching of loose original mouthpieces with the instruments to which they belong requires detailed metric information gathered from intact instruments of similar design. The article describes techniques by which these data can be obtained.
