This investigation was prompted by the realization (made as early as 1850) that old leather bookbindings deteriorate less quickly than new bindings. The author compares the pre-1850 binding techniques with the post-1850, from the tanning process to the dangers of air pollution. The mechanism of decay is discussed, and the effects of sulfur dioxide, acid conditions, and oxidation considered.
