Abstract
Intended as a textbook in materials science and microanalytical techniques, the book contains an introduction discussing the goals in scientific examination of works of art. The material properties of painting materials used between the 15th and 19th centuries in Europe are presented. This information includes: nomenclature, historical manufacture, physical properties, chemical composition, and means for specific analytical identification. Painting techniques are discussed in so far as they are influenced by the materials themselves.
