Abstract
The research was directed to learn the effects of org. Solvents on paint films of old-master paintings. Films were prepared from bleached alkali-refined raw linseed and vacuum cooked linseed oil. No driers were added. Large (56 X 46 cm.) sheets of Whatman No. 4 chromatographic paper were chosen as supports. The paper was immersed in 20 vol. % solution of the oil in petroleum ether, drained, and dried in indirect daylight for 48 weeks. The main conclusions from the leaching experiments are: (1) unsaturated (iodine-stainable) triglycerides do not appear in chromatograms of material extracted from dried raw oil and stand oil films; (2) such extracts consist of a heterogeneous mixture of saturated components together with a small amount of higher polarity material; (3) saponification of the extracts and chromatography of the free acids thus produced shows that these acids are saturated acids, 2 of which are tentatively identified with stearic and palmitic acids. These acids are found in extracts from both raw oil and stand oil films; (4) it is erroneous to believe that very aged oil-paint films in old master paintings reach a point where they are not leached by solvents.
