Abstract
The first six chapters, of particular interest to the paint technologist, examine the climatic and environmental conditions that cause degradation of polymers; methods of measuring ultraviolet radiation, with results obtained at various latitudes and in artificial weathering machines; the manner of conducting weathering trials; the effect of degradation on polymer properties, and methods of measurement; artificial weathering techniques; and the chemistry of photo-oxidation and stabilization. The last six chapters are devoted to the weathering of individual plastics and rubbers and are, therefore, of greater interest to the materials and plastics technologists, although the mechanism of breakdown, mentioned for each polymer, is of general interest. (Abstractor's note: there is no mention of the weathering of paint or paint resins).
