Abstract
Carved lacquerware decorated with scroll-shaped patterns arranged geometrically (guri) was produced in China from the Tang (618 AD-906 AD) through Yuan (1280 AD-1368 AD) periods. The dating of these pieces is problematic. Discusses guri pieces excavated from dated sites and attributes 12 guri pieces in Japanese and American collections to the Song period on the basis of stylistic comparisons. -- AATA
