Abstract
During the last 10 to 20 years, an accelerated progression of the decay of historical brickwork was observed, which was caused either by environmental attack or by using unsuitable materials during restoration. By means of several drill cores, it was possible to explore the manner of the construction of historic masonry and utilization of composites in their building materials, specifically the quality of brick and the mortar compound. The institute initiated an investigation to explain chemical reactions, taking place within the masonry, with respect to moisture, salt content, and water transport. Experimental evidence indicated a correlation between salt and moisture content.
