The earliest use of paint in America was on furniture, as decoration and protection. The geographical and historical development is briefly traced. Use of oil paint and distemper is indicated. Colors common in the 17th century were black, red, blue, green and white; 18th century colors included many others. The techniques of graining, japanning, and striping are explained. -- AATA
