Abstract
The effects induced by temperature variations (-40° + 300°C) are examined onwell-known>s marbles of different carbonatic composition, employed in buildings from time immemorial: 1) calcitic marbles from Candoglia, Piemonte and Lasa, Alto Adige (Italy), from Dhrama, Kavala and Nikisiani, Macedonia (Greece); 2) calcitic-dolomite marble from Thassos, Macedonia; 3) dolomitic marbles from Crevola, Piemonte and Georgiani, Macedonia. Several parameters have been determined: compositional and structural properties, uniaxial compressive strength, modulus of rupture in bending and splitting tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, thermal linear expansion and conductivity. It resulted that the breaking load to tensile strength, determined on the specimens maintained for 48 hours in isothermal conditions at different temperatures, is a useful parameter or the evaluation of the entity of the intergranular decohesion induced by temperature variation into the crystalline fabric of the investigated marbles. The correlations between the isothermal breaking loads, determined at -40°,-10°, -5°, -0°, -23°, 60°, 120°, 180°, 240°, and 300°C for differentorientations (alpha = 0° and alpha = 90°) and facies of the principal lithotypes have shown that the process of intergranular disequilibrium is already active between -40° and +60°, ie., in the range of temperature at which building stones are usually exposed. The influence of the prefixed thermal variations on marble specimens belonging to monuments has also been evaluated.
