Abstract
Provides insight into the mechanism of moisture transport in porous brickwork through the presentation of experimental results. Although a number of model ideas are known, unforunately, there is a lack in material characteristics which should be determined for the time being. So capillary action and evaporative behavior have been studied in laboratory scale by means of brick stacks at different test conditions. Each stack consists of some bricks having almost the same apparent density. The water uptake as a function of time gives typical curves according to which the stack of lowest density absorbs the largest amount of water at the highest relative humidity. Some findings confirm that the interfacial tension is of particular significance for capillary head, which can be elevated by solute salts e.g., by a saturated gypsum solution. With regard to the evaporative behavior there exist two periods distinctly separate from each other. Later this work will be extended to brick/mortar systems.
