Abstract
Ultrasonic testing, as used in the restoration of ancient Roman monuments in Rome, sheds light on the building methods employed and the processes of alteration. Two typical cases are described: the door or arch of the argentari and Trajan's column. The phenomenon of fluage and cracking of marble was observed; hypotheses concerning building methods and stability of the monuments were confirmed.
