Abstract
The most important calcareous natural building stones of Northern Belgium are the Tournaistone, the Petit Granit, and the Maastricht, Ieper, Balegem, and Gobertange stones. Besides some brief remarks on their historical background, their mineralogical and petrographical features are the main subjects of this paper, which stresses the importance of a petrographical approach to building stones.
