Abstract
Describes the treatment using a vacuum hot-table and an infrared lamp. The picture had been mounted on a rigid Masonite backing with white lead adhesive. This was not removed in the treatment. Placed face up on a vacuum hot table, the painting was covered with Melinex polyester sheet and rubber sheeting. After the entire structure had been allowed to heat up to about 100° F (40° C), the vacuum was raised from zero to 15 inches Hg. To increase the temperature an infrared lamp was held at 18 in. above the picture surface. By increasing the vacuum to 20 in. Hg and lowering the lamp to 12 in. above the picture surface, the temperature of the picture surface was raised to 180° F (82° C) at which point all the blisters within the 6 in. area covered by the lamp relaxed and flattened. The picture was allowed to cool to room temperature. To attach the blisters the entire surface was flooded with wax-resin and again placed under a vacuum of 20 in. Hg with a general heat of 140° F for one hour.
