Abstract
The national Memorials and places of Research for Classical German Literature at Weimar have organized in Summer 1967 a new Goethe Memorial in cooperation with the Town Council at Ilmenau in the local Amts-Haus. This memorial provides a necessary supplement to the two Goethe Memorials of the heights of the Thuringian Forest, Hunting Lodge Gabelbach and the Goethe-Haus in Stützerbach, and it permits an inside view of the many activities by Goethe in and around Ilmenau. The new museum consists of five rooms dedicated to the following subjects: History of Amt Ilmenau and Goethe's efforts of reform in the Ilmenau Tax Commission; Goethe visiting Ilmenau, and his poetical works in and around town, his circle of friends; the personal activities in restoring the mines of Ilmenau and in modernizing the smelters, his influence in improving the social lot of the population; the interest he took in the production of china at the local manufactury; and finally, a selection of common and of art glasses produced in Thuringian glass works. The central Goethe room is furnished in contemporary style, the other four rooms have modern furnishings. A major part of the article deals with problems of formation. The object in organizing the Goethe Memorial was to provide the present population with better knowledge of classical heritage and its creative potentialities.
