Abstract
The development of resistance to contact insecticides by stored grain insects in Australia has led to increased interest in the development of physical methods of insect control. Air heating of wheat in a fluidized bed is being evaluated as a rapid disinfestation process. Clean and infested wheat samples were subjected to varying heat treatments in a 10 kg batch fluidized bed. Wheat quality was not impaired when heated with 90°C air for up to 15 minutes. Immature stages of Sitophilus oryzae (L.), Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) and Sitotroga cerealella (Oliv.) were exposed to air temperatures of 60, 70 and 80°C with an air flow rate of 0.017 kg<sub>air</sub> s<sup>-1</sup>kg<sup>-1</sup> wheat giving an air velocity of 1.6 m s<sup>-1</sup>. Exposures of 12, 6 and 4 min. respectively produced surface temperatures of 59, 62 and 65°C and gave complete disinfection. Using these batch experiments to estimate the operating costs of a continuous-flow process indicates that high temperature disinfestation should be competitive with presently used methyl bromide fumigation.
