Abstract
Glueing of pages of ancient books by biodegradation occurs not only due to fungal hyphae but also because of viscous products formed by degradation of cellulose caused by enzymes secreted by fungi. Paper sheets are hardened into blocks upon drying. Glues contained in the paper have also a considerable effect on the process. -- ICCROM
