Abstract
Fumigation of cereal in silos is simplified by using Phostoxin pellets for phosphine dosage. After treatment of a cereal with Phostoxin pellets, the phosphine remaining in the cereal dropped to below the maximum tolerated level of 0.05 ppm after the cereal had been shifted once for restoring. There was no observed effect of phosphine under the given fumigation conditions which would influence further processing of any type of cereal (rye, wheat, barley). The treatment caused no noticeable changes in aspiration intensity, enzyme activity, or vitamin content. Health legislation in Germany requires that undecomposed residues of aluminum phosphide be removed from foodstuffs, a chiefly mechanical problem.
