Abstract
The author received for conservation and restoration a gold double spouted Peruvian vessel. This article presents a detailed account of the procedures employed to fabricate missing portions of the vessel using techniques as close as possible to those of the smith who originally made it. Particular attention is given to the Pre-Columbian method of joining the many individual pieces of gold that comprise the vessel. The author reproduces this joining technique which appears to have been responsible for certain surface features characteristic of the vessel in areas adjacent to the joins. The author further makes an argument for a new term to be applied to this joining technique when describing ancient pieces made in this fashion. The new term proposed is “photo-brazing.”
