Abstract
As a result of the investigation project for the conservation of the 16th century “Cristo Salvador del Mundo†(Christ Savior of the World) “Pantocrator†feather mosaic, property of the National Viceroyship Museum in Tepozotlan, of the Mexican Anthropology and History Institute, that was undertaken in 2002, the professors of the Workshop Seminar on Textile Conservation and Restoration of the “Manuel Castillo Negrete†National Conservation, Restoration and Museo-graphy School, developed various lines of investigation. One of the most significant ones is the characterization of the adhesive known as tzauhtli, used in the creation of the feather mosaic, to be used as an adhesive and consolidating element in textiles and basketry and twine fragment that are highly deteriorated. The objectives of the work are: 1) to investigate the adhesive known as tzauhtli, together with a group of, through physical and chemical tests, so as to identify its characteristics and properties; 2) to experiment and apply the adhesive on silk and cotton textiles as well as on basketry and twine fragments with a high degree of deterioration; 3) to inform the textile conservation community on the results obtained in the investigation process.
