When the National Museum of the Viceroyalty opened September 19th, 1964, there were many collections that were not going to be exhibited immediately, among them was a collection of sacred textiles and some secular suits from the 18th century. The collection includes liturgical clothing, chalice covers, canopies, stoles, altar cloths, and costumes for statues of saints; embroidered pictures, a blanket woven with feathers and four pictures also worked with feathers. The solution for storage was very simple: red cedar drawers were designed to avoid folding the textiles. When it was necessary to fold them, gentle curves were created with Chinese paper. Chinese paper or cotton fabric was used to separate the textiles from each other, avoiding contact between of silk and metal threads. The separating layers also allowed us to manipulate the textiles without touching them nor exerting tension in seams. Controls provided environmental conditions, relative humidity, and illumination, the presence of insects and amount of light exposure. Insect repellents and fungicides in fabric bags were placed in the drawers. At this time to forty-two years later, the textiles in these collections are some of the best preserved in Mexico.
