The Star-Spangled Banner, the flag that inspired the national anthem for the United States, is one of the most significant artifacts in the collections of the National Museum of American History, Kenneth E. Bering Center. When the museum reopens after an extensive renovation project, the permanent gallery for the Star-Spangled Banner will be the keystone of the exhibition program. This paper will discuss the technical aspects of designing the Gallery including how decisions were made regarding construction of the space, environmental controls, fire suppression, and lighting systems. It will discuss the preparation of the flag for exhibition and the steps taken to permit the permanent display of a very valuable, fragile textile.
