Abstract
The Treasures from Home gallery is a unique collection of mainly historic textiles donated to the Ellis Island Immigration Museum by families whose predecessors passed through there from 1892 to 1954 as immigrants to America. They often brought with them only one suitcase per family of precious items, their skills and hope, and the clothes on their backs. Transforming the former building that handled twelve million immigrants into a museum presented the usual challenges of retaining the existing structure of the building, while creating in internal space suitable for exhibitions. Directly adjacent to the gallery is a large UV-filtered skylight atrium. In association with gallery exhibition project, the distribution of light in the gallery was analyzed by logging the incident visible light. This raises issues of the interaction between ambient and specific collection lighting, and the conservation issues of controlling each source in relation to its role in illuminating the gallery – space and artifacts. Light loggers assessed the levels of light intensity at various angles. Information from the loggers provided critical data about natural and artificial light sources, including variations throughout the day and season. This allowed a number of lighting design solutions to be assessed and implemented.
