Abstract
This paper describes the preservation, documentation and analyses of fragments from Queen Kristina’s burial costume, which was made possible through a financial donation in 1999. Kristina was regent of Sweden from 1644 until her abdication in 1654 when she became a Catholic convert and left Sweden for Rome. She was buried in St. Peter’s Church in Rome in 1689. In 1965, her grave was opened to make a plaster cast of the silver mask that covered the Queen’s face and at the same time 55 textile fragments were taken from the coffin. All fragments have been documented according to materials and textile techniques. In three of the fragments dyestuff and mordant has been analyzed. The textile material is silk, except for one in wool. All metal is gilded silver. The most unexpected dyestuff detected in indigotin and brominated indigotin, a main component of Tyrian purple, found in the warp of the splendor costume. Due to different reasons, such as the fragments’ fragility and risks of further corrosion that could harm the metal and textiles, it was decided to store the fragments in a nitrogen-filled environment in 35% RH.
