Abstract
The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) has an active loans program ranging from a single object for a UK destination to entire exhibitions traveling to multiple venues worldwide. In recent years, the success of these touring exhibitions together with the positive policy of global tours to promote the Museum’s collections, has led to a steep rise in demand. It is now not unusual to have three or more exhibitions traveling simultaneously. In order to manage these multi-venue tours the V&A has developed new packing techniques which minimize the risks to objects. This enables pieces to be loaned that would not previously have been considered robust enough to travel. The safe transportation and display of V&A objects involves the combined efforts of conservation, technical services, exhibitions and registrars’ departments. This paper focuses on transporting costumes and textiles. The successfully completed 7-venue tour Art Deco 1914-1939 and the current touring exhibition Surreal Things: Surrealism and Design will be among the examples used to illustrate the issues involved and the solutions found. Topics covered will include: planning ahead, considering methods of transportation when choosing mounts; transporting costumes flat and on mannequins; packing of flat textiles; designing packing crates; condition reports and packing instructions; the role of the courier.
