The paper will present the problems caused to textile objects belonging to the former Royal collection of Tatoi Palace, due to natural disasters, fire and general neglect, as well as the first preventive conservation practices and documentation strategies applied by the Greek Ministry of Culture. The Tatoi Palace was the main residence of many generations of the Greek Royal family until the 1960s when the regime of royalty was abolished in Greece and the living members of the Royal family were relocated abroad, leaving behind not only objects of everyday use, but also collected works of art and other objects originating from many royal ancestors. The collection consists of royal clothing, furnishings and decorative textiles, carpets and tapestries, as well as an important collection of traditional and theatrical costumes. After the hasty departure of the Royal family and many bureaucratic procedures, the Palace and all its contents were devolved to the Greek State, it was simply locked and left to its destiny. During the following forty years, several natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes as well as two fires and other environmental deterioration factors such as high humidity and biological attack, afflicted the buildings and objects inside. The Greek Ministry of Culture has recently undertaken the massive project of documentation and preventive conservation of this collection. This paper will present the textile conservation team’s effort.
