In 1984, the Swedish National ICOM started a museum network with museums in Africa called Swedish-African Museum Project (SAMP). The project has from the start been supported by SIDA (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency). At the start, seven museums in Sweden and Africa joined the project. Today eighteen museums in nine African countries and thirteen Swedish museums are participating in SAMP. The National Museum in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, is going through an extensive change to become the National Museum and House of Culture, to better accommodate the needs of culture events in Tanzania. As part of the change, the museum needs more space and wants to add new buildings to those already existing. In 2003, the Swedish architect firm Michelsen in Helsingborg was contacted to help with the design of the new buildings. The building process is planned to start in 2007. The museum will be open of the public during this time and the collection will be moved at least once. In 2005, the museum director, collection manager and the local architect visited Kulturmagasinet which Michelsen designed in 1996. The visit led to a joint project between the two museums. I went to Tanzania in November 2006 for two weeks to help out with logistics, care and handling, storage facilities and pest management. Hopefully, the program will also give the collection manager at the National Museum and House of Culture a chance to come and work with the collection manager at Kulturmagasinet.
