Abstract
The authors provide definitions for the various types of interventions observed in mineral specimens (fake, reinforced, repaired, restored, stabilized) and a historical background to their use starting in the sixteenth century. They classify the various falsifications along the lines of the standard attributes applied to minerals: falsified attachment, falsified color, falsified luster, falsified clarity, falsified shape, falsified (crystal) faces, replication or synthesis, falsified surface composition. Manual alterations are discussed along with the growing use of radiological and particle beam exposure to induce color changes and phase growth. -- AATA
