Huaca Malena is an archaeological site on the coast of Peru, intensely pillaged for its fine textiles of the Wari epoch, 700-900 CE (Common Era). In 1998, we began archaeological excavations at the site, recovering a great quantity of textiles of exceptional quality. In May 1998, under the patronage of the ICOM Peru, we initiated the Adopt a Textile program to promote the conservation of textiles from Huaca Malena. To date, the program has preserved more than one hundred textiles, a clear example of the success of this campaign. People, institutions, companies, families, and children have joined the effort, with only the reward of protecting our patrimony. The conservation is carried out by specialist. The program, also, provides education, about the value of the archaeological patrimony, involving the community in the defence and protection of the textile pre-Hispanic patrimony, one of the principal legacies of ancient Peru. The importance and the success of the Adopt a Textile program, allowed the creation of Huaca Malena’s Municipal Museum, located in the district of Asia, near the archaeological zone. The concept of “adoption” implies the commitment to finance the conservation and expert cataloguing of every textile, which continues to be property of the state. The adopter does not acquire ownership of the fabric, only the satisfaction of having collaborated in the preservation of one of the most fragile and beautiful cultural materials of Peru.
