Abstract
Cyclododecane is a solid, volatile material, used in conservation since 1995. Cyclododecane and two other subliming substances were introduced into conservation by Hans Hangleiter and Erhard Jagers under the name volatile binding media. Cyclododecane is an intermediate in plastic chemistry, for example in nylon synthesis. It is produced by Degussa exclusively for processing and not for trade. The only exception are the small amounts sold for conservation purposes. Presently the amound used in conservation in Europe, Asia and Ausralia added up to about 9000 kg a year.
